The movie caused a sensation in Southeast Asia when it was released in cinemas in the early 1960s, resulting in a surge in interest in Teochew opera.In this short excerpt, which serves as a lively prologue to the play, the maid Tao Hua (桃花), needs to cross the river to carry a message to her lady, Liuniang. The elderly boatman (渡伯) who ferries her across the river loves to tease her and engage her in songs and riddles.
