The inaugural volume of the much-anticipated Joseph Smith Papers , released today, brings to light a project that has been under way for many years. This landmark publishing venture begins with Joseph Smiths personal journal entries, covering the years 1832 to 1839.This unprecedented compilation, to be published by The Church Historians Press, will eventually comprise 30 volumes, including journals, correspondence, discourses and written histories, as well as legal and business documents. Elder Marlin K. Jensen, Church historian and recorder, has called the Joseph Smith Papers Project the most significant Church history project of this generation. When finished, it will be the most complete and authoritative collection of documents related to Joseph Smith Jr., founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Joseph Smith Papers will rank among the most significant projects in the history of American religion, said Kenneth Minkema, director of the Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale Divinity School. The Joseph Smith Papers, Journals, Volume 1, grants readers a window into the life and personality of the Mormon prophet. Journal writings include doctrinal teachings and revelations as well as accounts of daily encounters and significant spiritual experiences, such as the First Vision and the Kirtland temple dedication. Informative annotations, maps, textual photos, reference materials and other tools provide context and bring the text to life. Editors present the text just as it was written, preserving the language, grammar and often nonstandard spelling of Smith and his scribes and conveying an authentic sense of the times. The fragile, 19th-century documents were previously seen only by a select few. Now, the curious of any faith or scholarly background can obtain a firsthand view of the religious leader directly from the transcripts of original manuscripts. The project follows the highest scholarly standards of documentary editing and has been endorsed by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, a division of the National Archives. Dec 3, 2008 - I am looking forward to buying the volumes!

uSoBayArea Says:

Dec 6, 2008 - ..I am hoping that the church will add these volumes as scripture so it'll be free! If not I'll purchase them, so I can have them as a collection...NEXT to my Mark Hoffman collection!

omiolo1 Says:

Dec 6, 2008 - "NEXT to my Mark Hoffman collection! "I have noticed you quote a lot of shady documents more than likely originated by Hoffman.

uSoBayArea Says:

Dec 6, 2008 - wow...you just don't get it. Mark hoffman duped your so called prophets and leaders....haha

Wehrheim04 Says:

Dec 6, 2008 - Great idea! Comparing truth and error, white and black, inspiration and counterfeit, so you can see the difference, is a good point for research. Anyway, not all Joseph wrote is Scripture, like not all Moses, or Abraham said were, but I suggest you give serious heed to those words which ARE Scripture, and which God will use as a standard to judge the world, according to how they were received by His children.

Wehrheim04 Says:

Dec 6, 2008 - wow...You and tons of others since 1830 (man, we're in 2008 and you still haven't learned the lesson: the works of God CANNOT be overthrown. They even killed Joseph and thought that was the end... and it was just the beginning!) just don't get it. You can rant until doomsday, but it won't do any good to you. You cannot break God's work, you can only break yourself against it. Satan really dupes so called 'wise in their own eyes' people since the dawn of time... not-so-haha, unfortunately :(

uSoBayArea Says:

Dec 6, 2008 - ..This is not GOD's work! This is the work of a tyrant and deceiver. And you fall for this bogus work. Trust in Jesus Christ and you'll find truth.

Dec 6, 2008 - 28 April 1985The Church News published the full text of the Salamander Letter. The First Presidency included a statement, "No one, of course, can be certain that Martin Harris wrote the document. However, at this point we accept the judgment of the examiner that there is no indication that it is a forgery. This does not preclude the possibility that it may have been forged at a time when the Church had many enemies. It is, however, an interesting document of the times"

Dec 6, 2008 - "Mark hoffman duped your so called prophets and leaders"actually you are the one who was duped. Read the Church News 28 April 1985.I am sorry you are deceived.

Dec 7, 2008 - ....let me guess...this was church stamped.

StillSmallVoices Says:

Dec 7, 2008 - Man, these whole Mormon vs Other Religion battles are so old and played out and such a waste of time, Mormons who get involved in this man, they are just as lost. There is so much happening in the world that is happening now that Ether Chapter 8 speaks about and most Mormons are suffering these things to participate in mindless pointless folly. I do look forward to reading these texts and hopefully people spend more time reading about the things that matter then resorting to mindless comment

omiolo1 Says:

Dec 7, 2008 - "....let me guess...this was church stamped. "is that your way of saying you are wrong?

omiolo1 Says:

Dec 7, 2008 - Joseph Smith, Jun., Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams were acknowledged presidents by the voice of the council; and Joseph Smith, Sen., John Smith, Joseph Coe, John Johnson, Martin Harris, John S. Carter, Jared Carter, Oliver Cowdery, Samuel H. Smith, Orson Hyde, Sylvester Smith, and Luke Johnson, high priests, were chosen to be a standing council for the church, by the unanimous voice of the council.

Dec 13, 2008 - History does repeat itself. Kinderhooked and Salamanderhooked. Where is Jesus in all of this manworship?
